This Pattachitra by National award-winning artist Niranjan Moharana depicts Lord Ganesha in a monochrome palm leaf engraving. There are three central figures of Ganesha, at the top he is in sleeping pose, at the centre he is in a dancing pose, and at the bottom he is playing music. Interestingly, his whole body is covered with further depictions of himself. Apart from more smaller depictions of Ganesha on the edges, the borders are adorned with beautiful intricate floral motifs.
Made up of two words: ‘Patta’ meaning cloth and ‘Chitra’ meaning image, Pattachitra is an art form that emerged from Puri (Odisha) where images of the deities and their chronicles are painted on a piece of cloth or palm leaves .
